Expatriate American writer (1874–1946) best known for novels, poetry, and opera libretti marked by a distinctive, playfully experimental, sometimes nonsensical use of language. ALS, one page, 5.25 x 4, embossed A Rose Is a Rose letterhead, no date. Letter to Kitty Buss. In full: “Thanks for your Christmas card and the best of new year’s greetings to you, and I hope you will like it, I mean the new year.” Accompanied by the back of an envelope with Stein’s red wax seal bearing the legend “A Rose is a Rose,” showing a red rose with petals and leaves. In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning. Letter is housed in a gold-lettered custom case. Buss was a friend of Stein and Alice Toklas and a part of their literary circle, rue de Fleurus.
