Gerrit or Gerard Maes (active 1656 - 1685 Den Haag and (or) Alkmaar) At the Doctor's, bottom left signed G. Maes, oil on canvas, 60 x 49 cm, w/ frame, (Wo).€ 4.500 - 7.000 US $ 4.460 - 6.930 Visiting a doctor, mainly - as in the case of the painting at hand - for the purposes of a pregnancy test - was a popular theme of 17th cent. Dutch painting. The artist of this painting has not been definitively identified. The Confrerie Pictura of 1666 lists Gerard Maes among its members, as a lender of money to his Den Haag landlord Francois Carré in 1656 and 1658. The second possibility would be Gerrit Maes, in 1669 a student of Gerrit Dou, who joined the Alkmaar guild in 1685. The present painting is the only signed by this artist.
