Abolitionist and close friend of John Brown who may have inadvertently helped finance Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry. ALS, one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, September 16, 1831. Letter to a gentleman attempting to raise funds. In part: “In June 1829 the Mad. Co. Bible Society resolved to raise $2000 within two years toward enabling the American Bible Society to accomplish its important object of supplying with the Bible all the families of the United States…At the late meeting of the County Society it was resolved that I should, as President of the Society, adopt measures for raising the balance due from each town…And now, Sir, allow me in view of the pledge given by our County Society and in view of the importance of enrolling the…Society to do the giant good it so literally designed to do—allow me…to contact you to set yourself about raising from the friend of the Bible in your town…the aforementioned.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered toning and foxing, heavier to front, and light show-through from text on reverse. An early and interesting letter from Smith at the beginning of his foray into social reform.
