* After a sea battle with British warships before the South-American coast, Captain Langsdorff ordered the self-sinking of the cruiser near the coast of Montevideo. Obverse shows Admiral Count Spee, the World War I naval hero after whom the cruiser was named and Captain Langsdorff the World War II commander of the vessel. The reverse reads in the exergue "By order of the Führer self-sunk at the La Plata on November 17, 1939." In the field, "Donation 1940," indicating that this medal was sold in order to raise money for a fund, set-aside to rebuild another. Admiral Graf Spee cruiser.
