Germanic swept-hilt rapier circa approx. 1620. This exact sword is pictured in Stone’s Glossary, page 525, figure 6. This sword was formerly in the Metropolitan Museum of Art donated from the collection of John Elliott Sr, York PA. Sold by Parke Bernet Galleries, 1962. The sword measures 47-1/2” overall with 40” blade. The blade measures approx. 1” across the ricasso. The blade shows a cross surrounded by four circles on each side, which was probably the armorer mark. The hilt shows good piercing and decoration in terminates in a tapered ball design with crosshatching, matching on the ends of thee quillon and pommel. The grip is an old replacement using sharkskin, The hilt shows a crack in the back of one quillon. The hilt and pommel shows some good quality forging, some light to moderate erosion and light to moderate pitting. The blade is very good plus to near fine with just some light pitting and dried oil and would clean nicely. A very attractive period rapier which just needs the handle rewrapped with wire in the proper form. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
