Germanic Style Basket Hilt Rapier
Developed in Germany, the "Pappenheimer" hilt profile posses elements of both cup and swept hilt designs, integrating ventilated plates into groupings of support arms. Blade extends 42 1/2" past the hilt, with the 2" ricasso protected by the guard and a set of double fullers on the main body of the blade, extending to nearly the tip. A set of 10 diamond shaped punches are visible on either side, in the fullers near the guard. Giving the overall appearance of a cup guard, the hilt has a set of dual turned quillions, 10" from tip to tip, wide side rings extending 6 to 6/12" across, and a pair of perforated guard plates, 4 3/4" by 3 1/2", supported with a set of reinforced front arms. The grip is wire and leather wrapped in a twist pattern, and the 2 1/2" long octagonal pommel is engraved with floral designs.

Condition: Fair. Heavy pitting is visible on the blade, with some material absent towards the tip. A small brazed repair is visible on the left side of the hilt, with a mixed brown and gray patina and light handling marks overall. The grip shows minor wear. A slight bend to the left is present in the blade near the tip, and a tiny amount of play in the pommel, aside from which the blade and all components are ruggedly fitted.
