German plug bayonet, late 1600s or early 1700s, exceptional condition and pedigreed. 206 grams; 18-1/2" long. The concept of a bayonet began in the early 1600s, when someone got the idea to ram his dagger into the end of his arquebus and use it as a polearm. By mid-century, short blades were manufactured with round handles specifically for plugging into the ends of rifles for closer combat, a technique that was later rendered obsolete by fixed bayonets outside the barrel. This plug bayonet is in excellent condition, with brass pommel and cross-guard, dark-brown horn handle, nice clean 1" blade with wide blood-groove, just a touch of surface rust near point but still sharp and intact, valuable pedigree. Pedigreed to the R.D.C. Evans collection, plated as #119 in his book The Plug Bayonet (2002), with original tag, and also pedigreed to our Treasure Auction #4, with lot-tag #1042.
