Description: Up for auction we have this German Nazi War Merit Cross Award with photos and papers. his award was created by Adolf Hitler in 1939 as a successor to the non-combatant Iron Cross which was used in earlier wars (same medal but with a different ribbon). The award was graded the same as the Iron Cross: War Merit Cross Second Class, War Merit Cross First Class, and Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross. The award had two variants: with swords given to soldiers for exceptional service in battle above and beyond the call of duty (but not worthy of an Iron Cross which was more a bravery award), and without swords for meritorious service behind the lines which could also be awarded to civilians. Recipients had to have the lower grade of the award before getting the next level. Based on the papers this award was War Merit Cross Second Class awarded in 1943 to a soldier who was in Riga Latvia by General Walter Braemer. The second cross is called a "Mother's Cross". Adolf Hitler Instituted the Mother's Cross on December 16th, 1938 during a propaganda campaign as a means to increase the birth rate of children who were to fulfill his dream of creating the "Master Race". The award was bestowed upon members of pure German blood in 3 classes. Bronze was for 4-5 children. Silver was for 6-7 children. The gold cross was for 8 or more children. Recipients of the cross were also given a cash reward or incentive for each child, and award certificate, and a 2nd cross in miniature for everyday wear. All items are in good condition as pictured
