German Model M-16 helmet taken as souvenir by American soldier in World War I. This helmet is hand-painted with scenes of an American artillery unit firing on German soldiers retreating across an open field with scenesof small towns in the background. The sky-blue top exhibits French planes shooting down German fighters. Explosions are visible on the front as well as a bullet impact hole. A black German iron cross adorns the frontwith the years 1914 to 1918. Just below the iron Cross a banner reading World War, 1914 -1918, Verdun, CH – Thierry, St. Mihiel. By tradition this helmet was taken it as a souvenir and an artist was commissioned topaint it after the war to commemorate the battles that the G.I. who brought it home had fought. Very interesting and decorative. Est.: $600-$1,200.
