The offset in colors ‘Victoria II’ by Gerhard Richter from 1987 is executed on cardboard. In 1986, Richter had created two paintings for the entrance hall of the Victoria Insurance in Düsseldorf, named ‘Victoria I and II’ – in this context, this print was created. The monumental paintings, with the original dimensions of each six times four meters, belong to the most important works by Richter.
The offset print in colors was presented in a limited edition to the jubilarians of the Victoria insurance (inscription verso on the frame). The work is signed and dated lower right in the print ‘Richter, 1987’. The sheet is in very good condition; merely the frame shows minimal traces of wear. The image size is 60 x 40 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 80 x 60 cm. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 81.4 x 61.4 cm.
Gerhard Richter (b. 1932)
The German artist Gerhard Richter works and lives in Cologne. From 1971 to 1993 he was Professor for painting at the art academy in Düsseldorf. After his training as a stage set and advertising painter he began his studies at the art academies in Dresden and Düsseldorf. Richter’s works are presented internationally, amongst others at the Biennial Venice, as well as at large retrospectives in New York and lately in the New National Gallery in Berlin. Gerhard Richter used photographs as models; he enlarged these motifs and then transferred them into his own preferred media – paintings and prints. He is known for his abstract, expressively colorful works which are created with color layers, abrasions and over painting. Richter’s experimental engagement with actuality and the painterly staged reality are visible in his entire oeuvre which has been honored widely. (tm)
