TLS as president signed “Jerry Ford,” one page, 6.5 x 9.75, White House letterhead, August 30, 1974. Letter to Robert S. Carter. In part: “I want to thank you for sending me your recommendations for Vice President and to assure you that your advice, and that of all the members of the Republican National Committee, weighed heavily in my judgment. The choice was a hard one because of the wealth of qualified men and women in our party (and I might just add that only Republicans were seriously considered for the post). I am confident that Governor Rockefeller will do an absolutely outstanding job for both our country and our party.” Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 19.25 x 16.75. In fine condition. Ford had just ascended to the presidency on August 9 after Nixon’s resignation, and he nominated Nelson Rockefeller to fill the vacated vice presidency on August 20. George Bush was the other top contender to fill the position, and Rockefeller was an unpopular choice—the nomination stalled in extended Congressional hearings, and his appointment to the vice presidency was finally approved on December 19, 1974.
