One of Ireland’s best known abstract painters, Gerald Davis originally studied at NCAD under Terence Gayer. Subsequently, in the company of fellow student Seán McSweeney, he took private lessons from Gayer, learning the traditional craftsmanship of oil painting. He held his first one-man exhibition in 1962 and has since had over 150 further solo exhibitions, some of them in his own gallery in Capel Street which he opened in 1970 as a venue to promote younger, un-established Irish artists. In the catalogue to a recent show with Kenny’s in Galway, he cites the influence of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Jack B. Yeats and Francis Bacon among others.
