Georgina Moutray Kyle RUA (1865-1950) ARDGLASS FISHING BOATS oil on canvas 26 by 34cm., 10.25 by 13.5in. Four other views of the herring boats at Ardglass, Co. Down, were exhibited in the recent retrospective of Moutray Kyle’s work at the Naughton Gallery, Queen’s University Belfast. In the accompanying catalogue essay, Eileen Black notes: “Fishing boats tied at quaysides were amongst Georgina’s preferred motifs and she seems to have derived much pleasure from painting the shapes of hulls and buoys… The fishing village of Ardglass in Co. Down was one of her favourite painting spots and she spent many summers there in a rented cottage”. The distinctive cropped viewpoint adopted by Kyle was apparently the result of her later cutting down her canvasses to remove what she considered extraneous compositional detail.
