I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of geometric shapes, both those formed by nature and those created by the human hand. To me, they have their own emotional force and, by incorporating geometric patterns into my work, I have been able to combine my passion for both art and mathematics, creating the perfect vehicle to explore and express my creative ideas. I’m particularly influenced by the designs on ancient bowls, cave walls, textiles, medieval manuscripts, and, most notably, maps. I normally incorporate other design elements of ancient maps, usually hidden within the overall design but, in this case, I have made Akkorokamui, the octopus-like sea monster of Ainu folklore, a focal point. Each piece is a unique journey without a preconceived beginning or end.

I love working in collaboration with my brother-in-law, professional woodturner Mike (Jackofsky) who specializes in making hollow vessels. I try to incorporate designs that complement his extraordinary pieces.
