1776 “Gold Option” Georgia Note Condition Census and of Superior Quality To The Newman Plate Specimen
Georgia. 1776. Two Spanish Milled Dollars. “Gold Option” Issue. Flag, Drum, Sword and Gun. Apparent small restoration in lower left corner. PCGS graded Very Fine-35.
Fr. GA-78. Serial No. 238. This uniquely styled, major type note is the sole denomination printed for this elusive Georgia issue. This uniface note is payable “in Gold or Silver, according to Resolution of CONGRESS.” Only perhaps a dozen or so examples of this issue are known. Printed in both red and black, the words “CERTIFICATE” and “CONGRESS” are in bold red, having been added in a special second printing, just to add that text and red color. The black text and vignette designs are extremely bold and dark, with sharp, clear details and is quite well centered.

Overall, this note enjoys the eye appeal of near Extremely Fine on its face. There are some typical light folds seen on the blank reverse, along with one contemporary name notation. The paper is clean and pleasing, thus making the rich text stand out in appearance. This note is fully signed in brown ink by Rae, Wereat, Goodgion, O'Bryen and Ewen. It has an indent margin at left, with perhaps the most historic and classic vignette type to be found any issue of Colonial currency of the Revolutionary War period, being the “Flag and Crossed Weapons” motif.

This note is one of just two of this exceedingly rare major Georgia currency type that were sold in the Boyd-Ford Collection. This note with the original Boyd pencil cost code on the blank verso. The other “Gold Option” Georgia note in the Ford Collection sale, Ford X, Lot 4535 was slightly finer and sold for $10,925 and locked away into a major collection years ago. Tied as the Finest Certified with one PMG example. This note is Ex: F.C.C. Boyd-Ford XV, Lot 8085 and is Condition Census. An important, true “Key” 1776 “Gold Option” note to and serious Georgia Colonial currency collection.
