Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) was a major 20th century French painter and sculptor who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the art movement known as Cubism. Braque developed his painting skills while working for his father, a house decorator. In 1890 Braque moved to Paris to study and the young artist was quickly drawn to the work of Fauvist artists, including Matisse, Derain and Dufy. Shortly after Braque met Picasso and the two evolved as leaders of Cubism. Braque's large compositions from the early part of his career incorporated the Cubist aim of representing the world as seen from a number of different viewpoints. Braque's later works explored the human figure and offered a more gestural style.
