TLS - Typed Letter Signed
Engineer and businessman (1846–1914) best known for the invention of the air brake and for his energetic promotion of AC power distribution. TLS signed “Geo. Westinghouse,” one page, 8.25 x 10, personal letterhead, March 16, 1907. Letter to former president Grover Cleveland. In part: “It has been a rare pleasure to know you and to be associated with you in an important work, the outcome of which is likely to be of lasting benefit to our fellow beings. It seems impossible to realize that your seventieth birthday is so very near. As I told you when we were last together, no one would think from your appearance that you were much beyond sixty years.” Intersecting folds (one through a single letter of signature), light edge toning, and some light haloing to the signature, otherwise fine condition.
A prolific inventor, Westinghouse obtained an average of more than one patent a month during the 1880s. In 1905, he, former president Grover Cleveland and Morgan J. O’Brien, the presiding judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York, were appointed trustees to reorganize the Equitable Life Assurance Company following a media smear campaign. In the wake of that scandal, Westinghouse here collaborates with the former chief executive “in an important work, the outcome of which is likely to be of lasting benefit to our fellow beings”—undoubtedly their efforts to save the company from ‘disreputable financiers’ John J. Astor, Henry Clay Frick, and J. P. Morgan. Fantastic corporate intrigue!
