Engineer and businessman (1846–1914) best known for the invention of the air brake and for his energetic promotion of AC power distribution. Partly-printed DS, signed “Geo Westinghouse, Jr,” two pages both sides, 8.5 x 14, June 29, 1888. Document states that Westinghouse and the Turtle Creek Railroad are obligated to pay the sum of $4000 to the Pennsylvania Railroad for using the Pennsylvania Railroad’s land to “establish, construct, and operate a railroad,” with a detailed description of the land in question written in a clerk’s hand. Accompanied by a 26 x 16 color hand-drawn map of the land, labeled “T.C.V.R.R. Through the property of the Pennsylvania Rail Road Co. in Braddock Twp, Allegheny Co. Pa, June 25, 1888,” which denotes the proposed railroad along Turtle Creek, as well as Old Plank Road and Westinghouse’s property. Ink cancellation lines through Westinghouse’s signature, scattered toning and soiling, and punch holes to top edge, otherwise very good condition. The drawing rates fine, with intersecting folds, punch and tack holes to a couple of edges, and some scattered light staining.
Much of the land in the upper Turtle Creek region of Pennsylvania, located about 12 miles east of Pittsburgh, was being cultivated around the time of this letter. Just three years later, Westinghouse and his Turtle Creek Valley Railroad opened a 6.5-mile stretch of track in the area—a plan referred to in this document. That same rail line was extended the following year. Interestingly, it was two years before Westinghouse signed the agreement offered here that he began working with inventor Nikola Tesla to create the motors and equipment necessary to deliver alternating current. Homes and businesses could now receive electricity even though they were located far from the generating plant. Unique content pertaining to the Keystone State and land that would later become the borough of Wilmerding.
