Third-person ANS on a 4.5 x 3 gilt-edged card, March 9, no year. Washington writes to Martha Dangerfield Bland, wife of Colonel Theodorick Bland of Virginia. In full: “General Washington presents his respectful compliments, and thanks to Mrs. Bland for the perusal of the book herewith returned—Sunday March 9.” A hint of mild soiling, otherwise remarkably clean, fine condition.
Bland—a colonel of the 1st Continental Light Dragoons during the Revolutionary War—was also a physician, soldier, and statesman from Prince George County, Virginia, who represented that state in both the Continental Congress and the US Congress. He and his wife were close friends of both George and Martha Washington, with that familiarity evident in this correspondence. Following a lackluster military career, Bland served in the Prince George County government and in 1780 was named a delegate to the Continental Congress. Later serving as a Virginia congressman, in 1790 he became the first US representative to die in office. Great association with the future president from a close, personal friend in a gold-edged format—the first of its kind that we have seen!
