ADS, signed “George Washington” in the text, one page, 6.25 x 3.25, February 13, 1768. A promissory note, completed entirely in Washington’s hand, reads, in full: “Borrowed and received from George Washington the sum of Ten pounds currency which I promise to return when demanded.” Document is also endorsed by the loan’s recipient T[homasin] Ellzey. Nicely matted and framed with a 19th century hand-colored portrait engraving of Washington to an overall size of 14.75 x 22.75. Inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in very good to fine condition, with small tear to bottom right corner lightly affecting Ellzey’s signature, a couple light horizontal folds, a uniform shade of toning, with a few small spots of heavier toning.
The Ellzey family were well-connected with Washington during this period. Thomasin Ellzey was a high-ranking church officials and hunting companion of the future president who, according to a Washington diary entry, were part of the same fox-hunt party the day before this promissory was signed. Perhaps it was during this excursion that Thomasin requested the loan! His brother, William Ellzey, acted as Washington’s attorney. It is no surprise that Thomasin Ellzey clearly knew who to approach for a loan, as in today’s dollars, George Washington assets would total more than half a billion dollars. In spite of that wealth, repayment was fully expected, as Washington’s ledger for February 13 explicitly noted this loan on its pages. A rare and attractive Washington financial document.
