Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Go: Washington,” one page, 8 x 13.5, June 5, 1783. Washington discharges Anthony Parcell from military service. In full: “These are to Certify that the Bearer hereof Anthony Parcil [sic], Corporal, in the New Jersey Battalion, having faithfully served the United States for six years and two months, and being inlisted for the War only, is hereby Discharged from the American Army.” Signed in the middle of the document in ink by Washington and countersigned by John Trumbull and an Adjutant, who awards Parcell the Badge of Merit for “six years faithful service.” Printed on the reverse of the document is a statement reading, “The within certificate shall not avail the Bearer as a Discharge, until the ratification of the definitive Treaty of Peace; previous to which Time, and until Proclamation thereof shall be made, He is to be considered as being on Furlough.” Document also bears a 1792 endorsement across the upper portion. Interestingly matted around its contours and housed between to pieces of Lucite, so both sides are visible, to an overall size of 11.5 x 17.25. In good condition, professionally silked, with professional repairs to intersecting folds, a horizontal fold directly under signature, paper loss to edges and at junction of folds, scattered toning and soiling, and a bit of light ink erosion to first two letters of signature. Washington’s signature is largely unaffected by most of the flaws and quite crisp and legible.

Anthony Parcell was a drummer in the Continental Army’s 2nd New Jersey Regiment, which was raised in October 1775. The regiment saw action in several different battles, including the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Yorktown. The regiment was furloughed just one day following Parcell’s discharge, and disbanded in November 1783. The “Badge of Merit” awarded to the corporal was created by Washington in 1782. Designed in the shape of a purple heart, it was presented to soldiers who exhibited, "not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way." Parcell clearly treasured this discharge, his commendation, and his service to Washington, as the item shows the tell-tale signs of being carried around for years.
