Ornate partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Go: Washington,” one page, 15 x 18.5, August 27, 1795. President Washington appoints Samuel Allison “an Ensign in the Second Sub Legion.” Signed at the conclusion by Washington, and countersigned by Secretary of War Timothy Pickering. In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered moderate toning and soiling, some lightly affecting Washington’s signature, both signatures a few shades light, but still legible, chipping to edges, wrinkling and rippling from moisture exposure, and partial mounting remnants to reverse.

Ensign Allison, who went on to serve under Captain Samuel Tinsley, was a witness to the Treaty of Colerain in Georgia, a treaty of peace and friendship between the Creek Nation and the federal government. It was Washington who, as chief executive, not only approved this appointment but also created the United States’ first official policy toward native Americans. Desirable military appointment from America’s first president and commander in chief.
