Full free frank, measuring 8.25 x 7 unfolded, with franked panel measuring 4.5 x 3., addressed in Washington’s hand to “Mr. Robert Lewis in Fauquier Cty,” and franked in the lower left of the panel “Go: Washington.” Above his signature, Washington has penned: “Recommended to the care of Jno. Lewis Esq Fredericksbg.” Manuscript postal markings along top read “Alex 12 Feby Free” and docket at the top, probably by Lewis reads, “From Genl Washington 11 Feby 1798.” Attractively double suede matted and framed with a bust portrait engraving of Washington and a biographical plaque to an overall size of 26 x 22.25. In very good condition, with vertical fold through address, scattered toning and soiling, some lightly affecting Washington’s signature, paper loss from seal at bottom, paper loss along a couple of folds, and mild creasing.
Written to his nephew, Robert Lewis, while Washington was battling financial problems, this frank likely accompanied a message from the former president regarding plans to lease some of his land holdings. Many of the letters between Washington and his nephew—the son of his deceased sister, Betty—also concerned the collection of rents due Washington on his western land. The other gentleman referenced here—”Jno. Lewis”—was Washington’s other nephew, who had inherited the Lewis plantation in Fredericksburg and sold the property soon after his mother’s death in 1797. An always desirable signature—with an additional nine words written by the Father of Our Country Oversized.
