Partly-printed DS, signed “Go: Washington,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 14, June 8, 1783. Washington discharges a New England soldier. In part: “Jonathan Millington Drum Major in the third Massachusetts Regiment, having faithfully served in the United States Eight years & one month and being inlisted [sic] for the War only, is hereby Discharged from the American army.” Cloth-matted with a portrait and descriptive plaque and framed (with a cut-out area on the reverse to allow viewing of both sides) to an overall size of 26.25 x 30. In very good condition, with heavy toning, scattered tears and small areas of missing paper, edge chipping, and several areas of tape repair (some old, some newer).
Dedicated to the fight for independence, Mr. Millington joined the service in May 1775 and serviced in the Continental Army for the next eight years. Assigned to the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment as a drummer, Millington and his fellow soldiers saw action at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Battle of Trois-Rivieres, Battle of Valcour Island, and the Battle of Saratoga. With the war nearly at its end by June 1783, Millington was undoubtedly relieved not only to have survived the conflict but contributed to the new nation’s freedom, earning this honorable discharge and the recognition of the Father of Our Country. Discharges for drummers are considered extremely unusual. Oversized.
