English-born forger (1813-1876) who forged letters from luminaries like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Horatio Nelson. An original Robert Spring forgery of a George Washington DS, signed “Go. Washington,” 4.25 x 2.75. In part, “Permission is granted to Mr. Lawrence and his negro boy Sam to pass and repass the picket at Ranapo.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a small tear along the bottom vertical fold, areas of heavy soiling, and show-through from mounting residue on the reverse. All writing is a bit light, but legible.
