[George Washington] Receipt For Wages Paid by President Washington to His Mount Vernon Estate Manager. Anthony Whitting Document Signed ("A. Whitting"), 1 page, 7.5" by 3", no place, June 6, 1791. Fragile, and partially backed; discolored and browned at edges, the text is discernible and the signature bold - good, all in all. In full: "Rec'd 6th June 1791 of George Washington eighteen pounds on acct. of wages due me from the President of the United States." Mount Vernon was badly run down when Washington inherited it, and it was the mission of his life to build it into the finest plantation in Virginia. Whiting was with him a long time; there are records of Washington complaining about him early on. But at its peak, Mount Vernon comprised more than 8,000 acres, contained five farms, and supported a few hundred people. It was always, after the cause of liberty and America, what Washington loved best. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
