George Washington Official Receipt.
George Washington Buys A Wax Seal, Official Receipt. One page, 7.5" x 4", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 11, 1792. This is a receipt for a Wax Seal Tamp, made of Gold for George Washington's nephew, arranged in Philadelphia by Tobias Lear. This unique historical document is nicely handwritten on fine, laid, watermarked paper. Toned along the bottom edge, well away from any of the text. Here Joseph Cooke of Philadelphia acknowledges the receipt of 7 pounds, 10 shillings, 0 pence from Tobias Lear, George Washington's personal secretary at the time. It reads: "a Gold Seal with Cyphor [sic] GAW & Crest." George Washington himself had no middle name, so the only close "GAW" member of his family was George Augustine Washington, his nephew, and son of his brother, Charles Washington. Also George Augustine Washington was born about 1763 and would have been 30 years old in 1792. This lavish gold crested seal tamp would have been a generous gift from his historic uncle, the president. Sadly, George Augustine died in 1793, preceding both his father and uncle in death. The document is in fine condition; some slight toning present around the edges; usual folds are present; small creases and tears along the lower edge; ink has eroded a small hole in the paper inside the paraph of Cooke's signature.
