Partial autograph invitation, probably written by a member of General Washington's staff: ''eral Washington presents his compliments / Colo. Ward requests the favour of his company / dinner to day 3 oClock / Saturday morning.” This invitation could have been sent in early Summer 1778, when both Washington and Ward were in New Jersey and before Ward was imprisoned by the English in the fall of 1778. Measures 6.5” x 2.75” on laid paper, affixed to a page of identical size. Three vertical folds and light soiling. Very good condition.
