Exceedingly Rare George Washington Inaugural Button “UNITY PROSPERITY & INDEPENDENCE” Large Star & 13 Smaller Stars Type Rarity - Albert WI-PC2, Cobb-21
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, “UNITY PROSPERITY & INDEPENDENCE” with Large Star Surrounded by 13 Smaller Stars, Albert WI-PC2, Cobb-21, Extremely Rare, Fine.
(Rarity-6 previously thought to be one of 3 known). 34 mm. Sharpness in detail of Very Fine, lacking its shank, having a shallow bend across its middle, with a uniform overall green-brass patina with surface irregularities. It may be possible to remove the bend to restore its original shape, yet we leave that consideration to the new owner. Overall, the legend’s text letters and designs remain mostly clear and the stars well defined on its decorative face. The reverse is blank, as always. Albert classifies this as a Patriotic Button, yet the celebrated J. H. Cobb catalog of Washington Buttons lists this as a Washington Inaugural Button (Cobb-21). The revised Cobb catalog (available online) says only three examples of this button are known, and lists 2 of the owners, perhaps others have been identified since. Though listed by Cobb, he apparently did not own this extremely rare piece, as it was not present in his own collection, sold at auction in 2005. A highly important George Washington Inaugural Button type, lacking in most all collections.
