George Washington autograph letter signed, dated 4 August 1799 from Mount Vernon, where the first President served out his retirement. Letter is addressed to Colonel Jeremiah Olney and reads in full, ''Dear Sir, Your favor of the 13th (?), accompanying the oration of Mr. Maxay, has been duly received, and for your own politeness in sending me the latter, I pray you to accept my thanks. The sentiments expressed by that Gentleman on Government, and tendency of the conduct as is opposed to the public functionaries in our own, are too just not to carry conviction to every (?) disposed and the reflecting mind. With every great esteem I remain / Dear Sir / Your Most ob'd 'Serv' / G. Washington''. Letter on one page measures 7.5'' x 9.75'' and is elegantly matted and framed with a portrait of the President to an overall size of 23.5'' x 17.5''. Letter has two significant vertical tears running through the entire letter and affecting certain words, though not signature. Some toning and foxing throughout. Overall, very good condition.
