American politician and diplomat (1794–1865) who served as a Massachusetts senator and governor, and then later as the United States Secretary of State. AQS on an off-white 5.25 x 3.25 slip. In full: “Washington was the greatest of good men & the best of great men. Edward Everett, Boston 30 April 1864.” In fine condition. In his efforts to preserve the George Washington Mount Vernon estate, Everett accrued over $70,000 worth of proceeds during his nationwide lecture tours in the mid-1850s.
