Novelist (1844–1925) who served in the Confederate Army. He wrote of violence and death, of racial intermarriage, and of contradictions and complexities. He is recognized today as one the South's most acute social critics. ALS signed “G. W. Cable,” one page both sides, 5.5 x 7, personal letterhead, August 15, 1892. Letter to Mr. Carey. In part: “My daughter Louise is going to New York tomorrow evening with a young lady friend to look at a certain flat, having a scheme afoot for some five young women and a chaperone to take it for the season in order to pursue studies that have to be pursued in New York; art & music. Might I ask of you so great a tax upon your time as for you to see the place with my daughter Wednesday forenoon and get if you can the secret of its seemingly exceptionally low price.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, tape remnants and toning to edges, and some scattered light soiling.
