George Washington: An Extremely Rare Variant of the Familiar "Linked States" 1789 Inaugural Button Variety. It differs from the familiar version in two significant respects: around the border is an ornate decoration, consisting of three small incise lines between each link. Also, this example originally had a gilded surface. The wear on the gilding is remarkably even and visually attractive, as the photo shows. It has survived in all the recesses and is only a little gone from the "G W" script letters at center. Condition is excellent, with a very slightly granular surface to the metal on careful examination. Listed by Albert as his WI 4B. He gives it a high R-6 rarity rating, and we have never before handled an example. Given the strong demand for the Linked States variety, this specimen should excite considerable interest.
