Printed Cotton, Germantown Print Works, Germantown, Pa., circa 1806. Titled; "The Effect of Principle Behold the Man." This rare, original brown printed white glazed cotton handkerchief is listed as no. 38 on page 63 in "Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present," published by the Smithsonian Institution. [Image: 11" x 11 5/8"; On textile sight: 11" x 12 3/4"]. Left side has been cropped to printed image with staples present. Toning with stains throughout. Not inspected outside of frame. The central image has a full length standing portrait of George Washington as President. Bears portion of his Farewell Address at left side and a eulogy on right. Features United States Federal Seal and ship scene labeled "Commercial Union" and "The British Lion" in vignette across the bottom. This important design is based on the mezzotint titled "General Washington, Father and Protector of America." The central figure of Washington is a copy from an original painting by Gilbert Stuart commissioned by William Constable.
