PS &#40;&#34;George R.I.&#34;&#41; on the mount and dated &#34;1939&#34;, 5¾&#34;&#34; x 4 5/8&#34; on a 7&#34; x 5&#34; mount, n.p. Imprinted &#34;Copyright Dorothy Wilding&#34; at lower left. Matted and framed to an overall size of 11½&#34; x 9½&#34;. Very fine. A handsome chest-up portrait of the King in uniform.<BR><BR>Born the second son of King George V, George VI was not expected to inherit the throne. He served in the Royal Navy during World War I, and married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923; they had two daughters, Elizabeth &#40;who succeeded him as Queen Elizabeth II&#41; and Margaret. When George V died in 1936, Edward &#40;known as David to his family and friends&#41; ascended the throne as Edward VIII. Less than a year later, Edward VIII abdicated to marry the American d ivorcée Wallis Simpson, and George became King.
