George V pattern Double-Florin, 1911, by Reginald Huth,
George V pattern Double-Florin, 1911, by Reginald Huth, struck in silver, Plain Edge. ESC-401. KM-PPn123 (at a ludicrous $900!). Struck by Pinches. Very rare as a type, but probably extremely rare in this marvelous state of preservation: PR65 PCGS. To most eyes, this should look undergraded, because it is truly a Superb Gem Roman Finish Proof. It sports splendid, original, pale silvery gray surfaces enlivened by some delicate blue iridescence, and is essentially flawless--with spectacular eye-appeal! Ex Norweb (no ticket). Also this is importantly a Terner Registry coin. Dr Jacob Y. Terner of Los Angeles was primarily a collector of gold, including gold patterns, but this coin intrigued him (as it has many others over the years) because of its marvelous engraving quality: the portrait shows King George in toga and ever so emperor-like, while the reverse design is a throng of mythic and emblematic creatures, including a dragon! The striking quality is medallic, and the distinctive finish is the result of one of those experiments done near the turn of the century, so unlike typical Proof or business-strike finishes from the Royal Mint. Thus, if you are looking for something truly special in a crown-sized silver piece, you can find it here in spades! No one else is likely to ever offer this pattern in such luxurious condition, for it is one-of-a-kind in this glorious grade. Finest certified.
With Octarinos selling for two grand when nice, a rarer and larger coin like this, especially such a special one, should be worth more than our high estimate, but the bidders will decide. Should be of interest to anyone collecting George V crowns or exotic patterns.
Ex Norweb Collection, ex Terner Collection

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
