George V eight-piece proof set 1935,
George V eight-piece proof set 1935,<p>consisting of a 1/4 penny, halfpenny, penny, threepence, sixpence, shilling, 2 shillings, and a 2-1/2 shillings, KM-PS10. One of the rarest of the early South African proof sets with an original delivery of only 20 sets. Formerly offered as lot 4843 in David Aker's August, 1999 sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, where it was described as: "This is a fantastic set that is one of the finest of the original South African proof sets offered herewith respect to overall quality, and perhaps the finest of the sets in terms of beauty because of the spectacular toning on the silver pieces. The bronze coins have lovely multicolored iridescent toning over medium brown surfaces (they are not lacquered), and the silver coins have deep mirror surfaces and the most vivid rainbow toning imaginable. The 3 pence or Tickey has a few faint hairlines under the superb toning (it is still the prettiest coin of the group), but the other silver coins are nearly flawless. Extremely rare; a mere 20 sets were minted and it is doubtful if more than a handful still exist as original, intact sets, and certainly none of the others could exceed, and perhaps not even match this set in terms of quality and beauty." 8 coins Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
