George V and Albert Victor "Eddy," Duke of Clarence. Cabinet photo by W & D Downy signed "George" and "Eddy 1896". George (1865-1936) wears a coat with naval buttons and Eddy (1864-1892) wears an elaborate dress uniform with chains and trimmings. Eddy, Duke of Clarence, the oldest son of Edward, Prince of Wales (and the future Edward VII), was allegedly involved in the Cleveland Street male brothel and was rumored to be Jack the Ripper, although it was never proven. When Eddy, who was second in line of succession to the throne, died in an influenza epidemic, George was next in line, becoming Prince of Wales in 1901 upon the death of his grandmother Victoria and the accession of his father. George married Mary of Teck, who had been Eddy's fiancée. He reigned as George V from 1910-1936.
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,500.
