British antislavery orator and activist; arguably one of the most important abolitionists and human rights lecturers in the United Kingdom and the United States (1804–1878). Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait by Notman of Montreal, signed in the lower border in black ink, and signed and inscribed on the reverse, “Mrs. Julia M. Friend, from Geo. Thompson, Roxbury, Feb. 27, 1867.” In fine condition, with light scattered foxing.
