British naval officer and arctic explorer (1831–1915). Three ALSs, each on an identical 4.5 x 7 page, two undated and the third dated November 29, 1876, each signed “G. S. Nares.” The 1876 letter reads in part: “We find some trouble about the passage of the men to London…the S. Western rail authorities don’t see their way to granting free passes and our men after the three weeks leave have scarcely the necessary money themselves. There will be 82 men to dinner at the time mentioned. I have written to 8 old Arctic men now warrant officers to find if they would care about meeting them and if so will let you know in time—altho’ the senior officers cannot get away from the Club dinner on the 5th—I will arrange for some of the senior executive officers to be present in uniform to represent us.” In very good condition.
