Spanish–born philosopher and author (1863–1952) who made significant contributions to the study of aesthetics, literary criticism, and modern speculative philosophy. His best-known work is The Life of Reason, in which he asserts that reason is a union of impulse and ideas. Two items: ALS signed “G. Santayana,” one page, 5.25 x 7.75, June 25, 1930. Santayana responds to an autograph request. In full: “I am very sorry but I have no photographs at hand, but I am glad to send you my autograph for what it is worth.”; and an original 5.25 x 7.75 hand-drawn portrait by E. M. Bloch signed in black ink along the bottom border, “G. Santayana.” Both double matted and framed to an overall size of 18.25 x 14.25. In fine condition.
