George Santayana Autograph Letter Signed "G. Santayana." This lot features a one page handwritten letter from George Santayana to a Mr. Knopf; it measures 7" x 11.8"; it is dated Rome, May 30, 1931. The signature appears in the lower right corner. The content is humorous and reads in part, "I have read Dr. Goldenweiser's book, and although I still don't know what Robots are, I see that he reads a great many intellectually exciting authors and is animated himself by a very reasonable spirit…Do you like the loss of mentality that goes with industrialization? I don't gather anything very definite on that point, though I have some idea that he would allow the industrial age to create and enjoy its own gods: so that Gods and Robots, after all need not be divided." The letter is full of interesting existential thoughts and ideas. Santayana is known for his lifelong and almost militant adherence to naturalism. He even insisted that he not be buried on consecrated ground when he died. Rather than being buried in the only such ground in Rome that was for prisoners, the Roman consulate designated a special area for him. This letter reflects some of his feelings on consciousness and adherence to values. A fascinating lot, with great content.
The letter is in fine condition with no issues at all. Existentially Excellent!
