George Sand Autograph Letter Signed "George". One page, 4.75" x 6.75", Paris, nd. This pipe smoking feminist writer used this pseudonym for her novels, while her real name was Amandine-Lucile -Aurore Dupin. Growing up in an aristocratic family, and eventually marrying into the title of Baroness, Sand was no stranger to high-society mores and the limitations they placed on women. After leaving her husband, she took to wearing mens clothing, which allowed her to move more freely around Paris and gave her access to many social activities she would have otherwise been excluded from. Her most famous novels include: Indiana, Consuelo, and Rose et Blanche. The letter was written to an unnamed recipient, and is entirely in French. It has been matted along with a lovely engraving of Sand wearing men's clothing, as was her style. Framed to an overall size of 15" x 10.25", the letter is in very fine condition; dark toning around the entire edge; usual folds are present; light toning on the fold lines. A wonderful piece from the woman who was described as: "What a brave man she was, What a good woman."
