Significant DS, signed "G. S. Patton, Jr.," two pages marked "Secret" at the top and bottom, 8 x 10.5, November 19, 1944. An official letter from George S. Patton recommending that "Halley G. Maddox, 0-12852, Colonel, General Staff Corps, Headquarters Third United States Army, G-3 Section, be awarded the Distinguished Service Medal." Below, Patton lists reasons for the commendation, including previously awarded decorations ("Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal") and his experience that led to his nomination, "Colonel Maddox, successively served as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, I Armored Corps and Desert Training Center, as Assistant G-3, Western Task Force, Seventh Army, and Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, Third U.S. Army, during the period of service for which this award is recommended," which was performed "in the United States, North Africa, Sicily, the United Kingdom and France." Patton ends the letter with a draft of the proposed citation and then signs neatly at the conclusion. In fine condition.

A career officer in the United States Army, Halley Grey Maddox (1899-1977) was the recipient of two Army Distinguished Service Medals. A veteran of World War II, Maddox served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (G-3) on the staff of General George S. Patton during Patton's command of the Seventh and Third U.S. Armies during combat in North Africa and Europe. He attained the rank of major general and was notable after World War II for his command of the 25th Infantry Division and Korean Military Advisory Group during the Korean War. He subsequently commanded the 9th Infantry Division and U.S. VII Corps. He later served as chief of staff and deputy commander of the United States Army Europe, and his final assignment before retiring in 1959 was deputy commander of the Second United States Army.
