American songwriter (1820-1895) who found particular fame during the Civil War. AMQS on an off-white 5.25 x 6 sheet. Roots pens two bars of music and lyrics to the Union version of ‘The Battle Cry of Freedom,’ with lyrics reading “Yes, we’ll rally round the flag boys!,” signing underneath, “Geo. F. Root, Chicago, January 1889.” In fine condition, with two horizontal folds. The Union version was used as the campaign song for the Lincoln-Johnson ticket in the 1864 presidential election.
