<B>George Read Autograph Document Signed</B></I> “<I>Geo: Read,</B></I>” two pages, 8” x 13”, front and verso. Kent County, November 1773. George Read, Attorney General for the Lower Counties of Delaware, writes, in part, “<I>If he the said Major Henderson should not appear at the these next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace and Gaol Delivery to be held at Dover aforersaid…and then and there abides and performs such order or orders as shou'd be made by the same Court for his assaulting Richard Millatt one of the Constables of the County aforesaid in the Execution of his office…the said George Read who sues…saith that the said Major Henderson did not appear at the these next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace and Gael Delivery held at Dover…</B></I>” Read has signed twice in the text and once at the conclusion. George Read was Attorney General for Lower Delaware (1763-1774) and a Member of the Continental Congress (1774-1777), signing the Declaration of Independence. He later served as Delaware's first U. S. Senator (1789-1793) and Chief Justice of Delaware from 1793 until his death in 1800. Strengthened at mid-horizontal fold in second page.
