George Orwell Animal Farm. Two first editions: one American first, one book club. (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co., 1946). Both 118 pages and 12mo (5.5" x 7.5") with dust jackets (both in protective mylar). American first is bound in black calico textured cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Book club is in green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Orwell's satire on Stalinist Soviet totalitarianism is generally considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. The central conflict of the novella concerns an animal takeover of Manor Farm led by tyrannical pig Napoleon, a thinly veiled fictional take on Joseph Stalin. The American first edition is about very good, with some noticeable spine wear on the dust jacket. The book club is in about very good condition, with a small stain on the back of the dust jacket and a bookplate on the front paste-down. Rare chance to get two original copies of Animal Farm with one bid.
