Grant. In fine condition. An odd wartime letter: here the patrician Meade asks "Butcher" Grant to receive an Englishman desirous of meeting distinguished men. <I>"Dear General - Mr. McMillan of London, who is on a visit to this country, naturally desires to see & make the acquaintance of all distinguished men - I have therefore given him this note to you & beg you will do me the favor to grant him an interview."</B></I> Grant was, at the time, engaged in the rescue of the beleaguered Union army under Rosecrans at Chattanooga.
