George McManus - Their Only Child Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (King Features Syndicate, undated). Before "The Simpsons" captured the foibles of the modern American family unit, there was another hilarious nuclear family, The Newlyweds and Their Baby, starring Baby Snookums. As is noted in the comic history 100 Years of American Comics Newspaper History, "The infant, known as Snookums, with his one tooth, bulb nose, and moronic expression, had a face only a mother could love. His parents indulged his every whim, and for the remainder of McManus' tenure the baby's tantrums constituted the mainspring for the gags." McManus retitled his strip Their Only Child when he left the Pulitzer papers for Hearst's in 1912. The strip ran for six years, until Bringing Up Father ultimately took over the funny paper limelight. The image area of this Sunday measures 16" x 18". The strip was cut between panel tiers two and three, and has since been carefully conjoined. Portions of the Sunday have been watercolored in eye-appealing red and green watercolor hues, and the page is in Excellent condition. Add a George McManus prize to your art collection with this superb Sunday!
