Superb original unpublished cartoon by George McManus, accomplished in graphite, ink, and colored pencil on an 8.5 x 9.75 sheet of artist paper, signed in the lower right corner, “Geo. McManus, Jan. 29, 1946.” The cartoon depicts Jiggs, from the Bringing Up Father comic strip, nursing a hangover and asking his gorgeous daughter Nora, “Daughter—will you call up Walter McCarty an’ ask him if I had a good time at his birthday party last night—.” Above Jiggs’s headboard are a pair of portraits: one of a cigar-chomping McManus and the other of an old racehorse, with text above reading: “Two Hay Burners.” Handsomely matted and framed with a plaque to an overall size of 14.25 x 17.5; the plaque reads, in part: “Walter McCarthy [sic] was a close personal friend of cartoonist McManus, who drew the cartoon after he attended McCarty’s birthday bash.” In fine condition.
